"Part of building a business was going out and sharing what you were doing with the world," Bashir says. For years Bashir's startup had been building muscle around these capabilities; now it had an eager audience. Eating at acclaimed restaurants is fine, but Bashir prefers the more-intimate affairs at tech executives' homes because, she says, "you can stay longer."

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson gained national attention this summer when he proposed buying one-way airfare out of Alaska's largest city for anyone without housing who wanted to leave before winter. The Anchorage Assembly just approved $4 million in funds and will vote on additional elements of an emergency plan next week. Anchorage last winter had a record 24 deaths outdoors among the homeless population, with 11 fatalities occurring in the winter months between October 2022 and April 2023, said Alexis Johnson, the city's homeless director. The city recently brought four more housing facilities, which could create space for another 310 people, but is still seeking winter housing for an estimated 400 to 450 people. By renting hotel rooms, Johnson hopes to limit the capacity of a mass winter homeless shelter to no more than 150 people — one of the Assembly's stipulations when releasing the emergency funds.

And he thinks meetings are the number one workplace habit killing people's productivity and eating away at their time. In a conversation with bestselling author Chris Voss on the interactive streaming platform Fireside, which Cuban co-founded, he said that people "over-meet and over-call." "I try to only do meetings if I have to come to a conclusion or there's no other way — same with phone calls," Cuban told Voss in late June. The result: According to Microsoft research, people are in three times more Teams meetings per week today compared to February 2020. The average worker spends 57% of her time communicating in meetings, email, and chat, says Microsoft. So if all of us are answering emails or going to meetings, when are we doing actual work? The company found that within its Microsoft 365 applications, people spend 57% of their time communicating in meetings, email, and chat. A nifty feature on my Google Calendar tells me that I spend anywhere from 15 to 18 hours a week in meetings. The logo for Slack is displayed on a trading post monitor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), June 20, 2019 in New York City. Buzzy chatbot technology is coming to Slack in a new way: Slack GPT, an in-app tool that allows users to shorten and adjust message tone, summarize missed messages in channels, assist with writing, take notes on calls or "huddles," and more. For example, you might ask the chatbot to take note of everything that was said on a Slack group call. Slack GPT can also summarize the dozens of messages you've missed in a specific chat group while you were out of the office. Ali Rayl, Slack's senior vice president of product, told CNBC she estimates that the AI chatbot tools will be rolled out within the next year but declined to give more specifics on the features' rollout timeline.
Fed bank directors generally stay out of the limelight, but many U.S. central bankers view them as a critical resource. "I think the probabilities are far higher of achieving that gentle transition, that smoother transition," San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly told Reuters in an interview. This year, of the 108 spots on the 12 Fed bank boards, 44% are filled by women, and 41% by people of color, a review of the data shows. Still, a majority of the Fed's economists are white men, as are its top two monetary policymakers: Powell and New York Fed President John Williams. Hispanics and Latinos, Menendez notes, are a fast-growing segment of the population but are underrepresented at the Fed at all levels, including on Fed bank boards.
It is likely to affect most of the bank's major divisions, with its investment banking arm facing the deepest cuts, a source told Reuters this month. "We know this is a difficult time for people leaving the firm," a Goldman Sachs statement on Wednesday said. Last year was challenging across groups including credit, equities, and investment banking broadly, said Paul Sorbera, president of Wall Street recruitment firm Alliance Consulting. Valentina Sleek is a 28-year-old Trader Joe's artist in Charlotte, North Carolina. I applied for an opening I came across at Trader Joe's as a crew member who bags groceries. I have to remind myself that the store art is only temporary. As a rough estimate, I'd say that I've done more than 400 pieces of art for Trader Joe's since working with them. Trader Joe's has taken care of me, and the fact that they keep investing in original store art is what makes them popular.
That moment is known in Japan as "the agony of Doha" and remains one of the country's biggest soccer setbacks. Despite missing their goal of a last eight finish, he said his team showed a new era of Japanese soccer had begun. "We couldn't break the barrier towards the final eight, but the players were able to show a new generation of Japanese soccer," he said. "We beat Germany and Spain - World Cup champions. We should be confident in our ability and if we aim not just to catch up to but to surpass, I think there will be a different future ahead for Japanese soccer."
CNN —As the hurricane season closes, a handful of blockbuster storms made history after an eerily quiet first half of the season gave false hope. In fact, we didn’t have any named storms from July 3 to August 31, the first time that’s occurred since 1941. One of those storms was Hurricane Ian, which hit land in late September and will go down as the most memorable storm of the 2022 season. “Tropical storms have formed in every month outside of hurricane season, and there have been a few hurricanes, too,” NOAA said. Historically, we’ve seen at least 15 named storms form in the month of December, even all the way up to December 30.
A September 2022 poll by Gallup found that "quiet quitters make up at least 50% of the US workforce." For some employers, the concept of quiet quitting might stoke fears of disengaged workers doing the bare minimum. Lead with empathyConsidering how employees' time should be prioritized will help you decide how your team needs to work together. Eliminate meeting fatigueMeeting fatigue is real, and at Slack, we believe there are better ways to communicate than back-to-back meetings. To streamline tasks and free up time for the work that's actually part of your job description, teams turn to Slack workflows.
When we work smarter, not harder, we can harness our work tools and use technology to our advantage. That flexibility makes space for new ways to work smarter, not harder. In short: Your digital HQ is a way to work, not a place to work. Teams working across various time zones can schedule messages so their colleagues get them when they are online and active. Anyone has the power to use no-code or low-code features in Slack to automate admin work and repetitive tasks, freeing up valuable chunks of time to work on more strategic and meaningful work.
